Is it vampirism or a disease? The question of all questions. Disease not only meaning a physical ailment, but a mental ailment as well. Here's another term that hasn't been discussed or even touched on by any other site that I've encountered. "PSYCHOSOMATIC" The term taken from our friends that wrote the lovely Webster's II New College Dictionary. Psychosomatic-adj. 1. Of or relating to the influence of the mind on the body. 2. Of or relation to a disorder having physical manifestations but originating from mental or emotional causes. --n. One who experiences bodily symptoms because of mental conflict.
Why did I put that on here? Simple. Being a social outcast is far too difficult on most people and most of them are young in age. Many want to belong so badly someplace and fit in anywhere that the burden of being a social outcast (including in or out of the family) begins to take it's mental and physical toll. Depression can start to take it's grip, and with depression comes certain physical and/or mental issues. Such as insomnia and body aches, migraines. I won't go into full terminology here, just look up depression and it's ranges of symptoms and you'll see for yourself. Back to the psychosomatic term. With these physical ailments and the inability to properly cope with the mental burden of not fitting in many of these people turn to the fantasy world or drugs or of course even both.
Vampires are "misfits" dark and mysterious and being an outcast in the real world what better way to "fit in" someplace but with other "misfits". Some can even believe they are werewolves. I am not bashing, but skeptical of werewolves this includes anyone that believes they turn into one fur and all. Back on track, many people are so quick to grasp a concept and make it their own. They can take the full list of symptoms of vampirism and actually have false memories or begin to self manifest those symptoms within themselves. This goes right back to the term "psychosomatic". This is why when many come to me for help and ask of the symptoms, I return the question and ask them what their symptoms are. You'd be surprised at how many don't write back. I do not want to "feed" any ideas or pre-exsisting thoughts and make things worse. Many vampiric communities/groups/pages and sites do not put this into consideration.
I can hear it now, "So what makes you think you didn't 'give' yourself the symptoms of your own vampirism?" For one, vampirism was the furthest thing from my mind. Second, I wasn't looking to fit in anywhere. Third, I know when I'm depressed or not quite right and can bounce back from it within a few hours to a day. Fourth, I walk in my own shoes with an open mind always questioning and not quick to accept answers from one person nor do I take the answers as fact or truth unless I cannot disprove them. Fifth, I accept the flaws I have and learn from them. I don't try to hide or cover them with idiocy fanatical dreams or ideas that I get from movies or books. I know the fine line of reality and fantasy. I also know the truth of vampirism, it's not lovely wings and immortality. Nor will you live for hundreds or thousands of years, that's crazy talk.
Please understand before reading just a few of diseases listed here. I am NOT a doctor, the information given here is easily obtainable to anyone with access to the web or a library. Not all diseases that mimic vampirism are listed here. Do not think that just because it's not listed here means what you have is vampirism. I cannot and will not give medical advice.
Cyclothymic Personality Disorder; is a pervasive pattern of pronounced changes in mood, behavior, thinking, sleep, and energy levels, beginning by early adulthood. Symptoms can include: has a decreased need for sleep alternating with hypersomnia. Periods of sharpened and creative thinking alternating with periods of mental confusion and apathy, etc.*
*The full context of symptoms are not listed here, feel free to copy and paste the term. Or use these links here. What is Cyclothymic?Cyclothymic Personality Disorder I have included this disorder simply to show that many think that the need for less sleep makes them a vampire when in fact there are non-mystical reasons. This can be one of many reasons.
Heat and Sun Stroke This is caused by a few factors such as not taking in enough fluids to stay hydrated, age, medical illness, medications and other causes. Some symptoms are Headache, nausea, dizziness Red, dry, very hot skin (sweating has ceased) Pulse-strong & rapid Small pupils Very high fever May become extremely disoriented Unconsciousness and possible convulsions
I know of a few vampires that love the sun and don't get sick from it.
POLYMORPHIC LIGHT ERUPTION; a rash that is induced by sunlight. A few people have written me saying they have broken out in some rash just from being in the sun. This is not vampirism, it is a serious medical condition. See your doctor! Don't consult me or any other person except a doctor if you've got an allergic reaction or any reaction. Unless you think the E.R. is a fun place to be. Yes there are people that are allergic to the sun, I had a friend with this and it made her terribly sick and she is not a vampire. Another condition is photosensitivity. So photosensitivity does not mean you are a vampire.
PORPHYRIA is another medical condition that rarely gets any consideration as for the possible causes of any likeness in the reference to the symptoms of vampiric awakening. The is little proof of people with porphyria drinking their own blood or the blood of another to alleviate their medical condition or symptoms so far from what I can find. Here are some symptoms taken from www.mcsrr.org website. If you know of a medical site that does have evidence of people with this condition drinking blood to ease their condition, please send me the link and I will be happy to place it here.
The "acute" porphyrias always display neurological symptoms affecting the central, peripheral and/or autonomic nervous systems. These may include any combination of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, seizures, headaches, difficulty concentrating, personality changes, weakness and aching in muscles and joints, unsteady gait, poor coordination, numbness/ tingling of arms and legs, retaining fluids, rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, increased sweating, and intermittent fever.
Some claim to need to take in blood for nutritional value, this is also not vampirism. You have an iron deficiency. Think about pregnant women that eat clay or dirt, same thing. They are lacking a mineral(s) and their body is having them replace it in strange ways. See your doctor, have him do some blood work for anemia.
