Vampires:What's in a Name?
I have had someone ask me a great question. "Why the term "Vampire?"
I explained to this person the whole energy aspect of it, and she understood, but was still puzzled
and asked again, "Why the term "Vampire?"
I had realized not many, including vampires understand why we are called as such.
Here is the term 'vampire' according to the Oxford University Press dictionary.
Vampire >noun 1 (in folklore) a corpse supposed to leave its grave at night to drink the blood of
the living.
-DERIVATIVES vampiric >adjective vampirism >noun.
-ORIGIN Hungarian vampir, perhaps from Turkish uber 'witch'.
Keep in mind there are several dictionaries out there and many have their own definitions, as do people.
Vampires (not all) usually ask their donor if they may feed, and will only do so for a short period of
time, which is sufficient enough to restore balance or the loss of their energy.
I may anger some of you reading this, but there is truth to this. I am not saying we vampires are a
bad lot, I am trying to explain as simply as possible why the term vampire may be used. Keep in
mind "Vampire" is a label, not a description of us.
There are many arguments on where the actual meaning of the word Vampire comes from. I can go
into great detail here, but anyone that is interested on the different vampires from different cultures
to visit the *Vampire in Myths page. That page will explain the origins of the names of the various
vampires from different cultures.
Onward, many will agree the actual word itself (vampire) is Slavic in Origin. All of the myths, with the
differences on names included points to the same thing. The vampire has to feed in order to
maintain itself, a way to stay alive. In fictitious stories, the vampire drains the blood or life energy
from it's victim to survive almost always killing it's victim. In reality, we vampires take enough energy
or blood (always a small amount) to restore balance to our lacking of energy, not to stay alive, we
are already living. We never kill, or simply pounce on random people, the pouncing however is in
complete fun and we know the other person.
The "vampires" from the myths of varying cultures also had their own individual way of maintaining
their own life, be it from consuming young virgins to draining the life out of a person while they lay
sleeping. We true vampires also have our own feeding methods and are labeled accordingly. Yes
labeled. Sanguinarians feed from blood, Elementals feed from the elements, Empaths feed from
emotion, psychic vampires feed psychically, so on and so forth..I'm sure you get the idea.
Why the term "Vampire?" Why mess with a good thing that has been around for centuries. Sounds
better than, "Energy sucker" or "Energy Deficient Individual That Takes the Energy or Blood From
Selected Sources". This is why the term "Vampire" is used, this is what we are, this is how we have
for centuries been understood, by the name Vampire. Vampire is a universal term and is more
openly understood and accepted by Vamps and mundanes alike. Vampires are known to feed off
the living, and off any other source, this is true in myths and reality, but for obvious differences.
